  Development of and basic study on a novel photodynamic therapy/photodynamic diagnosis system

Our group has developed a sensitive photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and novel selective photodynamic therapy (PDT) system for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors. The system uses an ultrathin endoscope or catheter in order to reduce the invasiveness of the treatment for patients. We have found an innovative method to arrange the depth of the PDT treatment based on the control of the irradiation light itself. To elucidate the mechanism of light-controlled PDT, we have investigated the interaction between the internal energy kinetics of the photosensitizer and treatment light energy. Our highly selective PDT based on the light-controlled concept may be clinically applicable in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of tumor lesions.
