Minimally invasive treatments for solid tumors based on the sentinel node concept

The sentinel node (SN) is defined as a node draining directly from the primary lesion. The tumor status of SNs is representative of the presence or absence of metastasis in the regional nodal basin. This concept was originally proposed by several pioneers in the middle of the last century and validated in superficial malignancies such as breast cancer and melanoma. We have introduced this technology into the field of gastrointestinal cancers using a radio-guided method in 1999. Since then it has attracted a great deal of attention in surgical oncology. In this COE program we are developing several possible applications with different technological aspects such as individualized surgical management of solid tumors, multi-disciplinary treatments and novel therapeutic approaches based on the SN concept.
